New Senior Director of Therapy Services and Two Additional Clinical Leads Strengthens AtHome Therapy team
MOUNT LAUREL, NJ – Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry practice in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral care, recently appointed Marlene McDermott as Senior Director of Therapy Services. In addition to McDermott’s newly appointed role, Gina Mendez and Joshua Taffet have joined as Clinical Leads for the AtHome Therapy team. Together, they will be instrumental in advancing Array’s therapy management and quality initiatives.
As Senior Director of Therapy Services, McDermott will report to Chief Medical Officer, Dr. James R. Varrell, and continue to manage AtHome's Clinician Success and Care Management functions. Gina Mendez and Josh Taffet will report directly to McDermott in their new roles as Clinical Leads. In offering one-to-one support, conducting quarterly check-in meetings for their caseload of clinicians, and clinical oversight, Mendez and Taffet will co-lead day-to-day operations and continue supporting Array’s growing and thriving Therapy function. Together, the AtHome Therapy team will oversee the standardization and uniformity across therapy treatment and quality measurement processes. Quality initiatives have been shown to improve outcomes for patients, reduce variations in care quality and burden on clinicians, and raise quality standards across all aspects of a clinical organization.
As the demand for mental health care continues to soar, Array has continued to prioritize the growth of a robust clinical leadership team. The clinical leadership team is responsible for making sure Array meets the rising demand for mental health services. Virtual therapy and telebehavorial care lower the barrier for entry for the more than one-third of Americans who live in areas that lack adequate access to mental health professionals. Data shows that telebehavioral care can have just as effective outcomes as in-person care.
Array is committed to fostering a collaborative and best-in-class experience for its clinicians. Array’s clinician network has the flexibility to select among multiple care settings, serve several organizations and the opportunity to work with various patient populations. Array has also established a robust technical and administrative infrastructure to ensure its teams are well connected and highly responsive. In addition to around-the-clock clinical, operational and technical support to help with their care delivery, Array’s user-friendly systems enable clinicians, care navigation teams and personnel at partner sites to seamlessly communicate, collaborate, and build strong relationships.
“The expansion of our clinical leadership team over the past few years is indicative of our commitment to clinical quality. Array prioritizes being a care-focused organization enabled by technology,” explains Dr. Varrell, founder and Chief Medical Officer of Array. “We know a strong clinical leadership team is essential to delivering the highest quality of telebehavioral care.”

VCU’s Tappahannock Hospital is Second in VCU Health System to Receive 24/7 Telepsychiatry Coverage from Array
Tappahannock, VA – VCU Tappahannock Hospital today announced a telepsychiatry program that will support patients with mental health needs with access to timely, high-quality behavioral health services in partnership with Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry practice in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral health care. With new around-the-clock psychiatric services delivered through in-hospital videoconferencing, VCU Tappahannock Hospital will integrate Array’s experienced behavioral health clinicians across its emergency department, medical, and surgical units. The partnership will deliver more timely, proficient, and appropriate coverage to Essex County patients and help address the growing mental health crisis in this rural area of the state.
Telepsychiatry Partnership and Patient Access to Psychiatric Services in Virginia
The innovative program at VCU Tappahannock Hospital implements on-demand telepsychiatry services for patients and support for onsite staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This virtualized model has been proven to be an efficient, convenient, and cost-effective form of mental health care delivery to safely expand psychiatric care and overcome staffing shortages of in-person psychiatric providers. Array’s licensed psychiatric clinicians will see VCU Tappahannock’s admitted patients and those in the emergency department online directly and consult with hospitalists on treatment plans, psychiatric evaluations and assessments, disposition decisions, and prescribe medication, if needed.
This program is the second partnership of its kind with the VCU Health. Array has delivered on-demand emergency department telepsychiatry services at VCU’s Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA since May 2020. With this additional clinical support, VCU Tappahannock Hospital will be positioned to shorten wait times, make better use of available beds, improve satisfaction, and help ensure their patients are receiving the most suitable, least restrictive level of care. Array has more than a decade of experience in Virginia helping to reduce psychiatric boarding in emergency departments.
“The increasing rise of mental health cases and needs in our community has stretched the capacity of our resources to support these patients with the specialty services they deserve. Our partnership with Array has helped us meet that need at VCU Health Tappahannock Hospital,” said hospital president Liz Martin.
“From consults and answering questions to direct patient care and rounding for follow-up, Array’s extensive clinical expertise will now enhance our behavioral health capacity in ways our staff and patients at Tappahannock urgently need. I’m confident this program will have a positive impact on our goal to provide safe, high-quality comprehensive care, to include mental health support.”
VCU Health and Array Behavioral Care Telepsychiatry Partnership
The VCU Tappahannock and Array partnership come as there’s been an increase in mental health admissions in emergency departments nationwide and a shortage of behavioral health clinicians available to meet demand. According to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association, Emergency Departments across Virginia have reported a nearly 4% statewide increase in the number of patients presenting with behavioral health issues and mental health emergency admissions. At the same time, staffing shortages at Virginia’s mental hospitals have overwhelmed facilitates as the patient population has surged since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are pleased to strengthen our partnership with VCU Health by extending this program to Tappahannock Hospital,” said Array Vice President Liz Bello. “As patients’ mental and behavioral health needs continue to grow, our telepsychiatry services ensures VCU Tappahannock’s onsite care team and their patients don’t have to wait days when they need psychiatric services immediately. This latest extension of Array’s telepsychiatry program continues our commitment to expand access to high quality behavioral health care for facilities and individuals in rural communities.”

Sidney, MT – Sidney Health Center, a nonprofit community based medical center serving people in the MonDak region for more than 100 years, announced the recent launch of a new emergency department telepsychiatry program in partnership with Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry practice in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral health care. With psychiatry delivered through real-time, in-hospital videoconferencing, Sidney Health Center’s emergency clinicians and patients will now have greater access to appropriate, timely psychiatric coverage to address the growing mental health crisis. The leading telepsychiatry service provider expands its geographical footprint in Illinois by offering Array AtHome telepsychiatry to more than 9 million people across the state.
Mount Laurel, NJ – September 20, 2021 — Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry practice in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral care, announced today its new partnership with BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois (BCBS IL) to provide convenient online psychiatry and therapy services to BCBS Illinois members. Effective August 24, 2021, Array is a covered benefit for more than 9.3 million lives in Illinois through its relationships with healthcare payers. In addition to being in network BCBS IL, Array is an existing partner to 35 community clinics and two hospitals across Illinois.
Telebehavioral health has emerged as a modality of care delivery that payers have used to fill the gap between community needs and industry constraints. The increased demand for behavioral care services coupled with provider shortages has made it difficult for payers to meet the needs of their members. Through Array, BCBS IL members have access to a large network of licensed professional therapists and psychiatry clinicians to receive high-quality care.
Array Behavioral Care Extends Outreach in Illinois with BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois Partnership
With greater and more convenient access to care, BCBS IL is among many payers taking steps to expand coverage for telebehavioral services for their members during the pandemic and beyond the COVID-19 crisis. In addition to the partnership with BlueCross Blue Shield Illinois, Array Behavioral Care is in-network with the following health plans in Illinois: Aetna, Cigna, Cigna Medicare Advantage and Optum Healthcare.
“Illinois has been heavily impacted by the nation’s behavioral health workforce shortage. Currently, over 4.8 million Illinois residents reside in a designated Mental Health Professional Shortage Area. Through our partnership with BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois and several other health plans, we aim to provide specialized mental health support with our large and diverse network of clinicians,” said Justine Mitchell, Senior Vice President of Array AtHome. “What every payer knows about mental health is that it’s not enough to just have availability, patients also need to connect with clinicians who they can determine as the right fit for them.”
As the largest telepsychiatry service provider in the country, Array’s services are a covered benefit for more than 87 million individuals nationwide. Array’s AtHome care makes it easy for patients to connect with psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, counselors, or therapists from wherever is convenient for them. Physician organization and behavioral care industry leaders target anxiety and depression
Mount Laurel, NJ, and Chicago, IL – September 8, 2021 — Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry service provider in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral care, today announced an expanded partnership with United Physicians, one of the country’s largest physician organizations, on a new telebehavioral Collaborative Care Model for adolescents at participating pediatrician offices in Michigan. A first of its kind, the pediatric Collaborative Care Model comes on the heels of a recently launched, immediately successful behavioral care program by Array and United Physicians targeting adults in primary care settings. Both the adult and pediatric programs are rapidly expanding to new practices across Michigan.
As a result of the rise in demand for behavioral care needs among children and teens, the Collaborative Care Model has emerged as a key component of behavioral health integration in pediatric settings. Research shows that there are only nine psychiatrists per 100,000 people, and child and adolescent specialists are in even shorter supply. Under the new Array and United Physicians Collaborative Care Model, a participating pediatrician works closely with Array’s behavioral health clinicians to provide timely access to scarce child psychiatric resources. By connecting pediatricians with child and adolescent psychiatrists virtually, Array and United Physicians empower PCPs to manage more care needs in the primary care environment patients are familiar with. Not only does this remove barriers to access and minimize referral follow-up issues, but it also helps remove stigmas associated with mental health treatment by connecting the treatment to the established PCP–patient relationship.
In the program, pediatricians identify patients between the ages of 12 and 18 in need of behavioral health care through screenings, such as PHQ-9 (depression) and GAD-7 (anxiety). Once a patient is identified, the pediatrician discusses program enrollment with the patient and works with Array’s behavioral health care managers and consulting psychiatrist on a treatment plan. The program is integrated clinically as well as operationally. Array clinicians work within pediatricians’ EMRs to see and suggest prescriptions for medications. Additionally, the teams utilize detailed registries to track patients’ progress over time. What’s more, these Collaborative Care services are not only scalable and available to pediatric practices of all sizes, but are a covered benefit under patients’ health plans, making this critical behavioral care financially accessible to both patients and physicians.
“Our PCPs have been inundated with behavioral health needs, yet have not had the resources to address them in the most timely, appropriate, or financially feasible manner,” said Dr. Kim Coleman, Chief Medical Officer at United Physicians. “We’ve seen how our partnership with Array improved the health of our adult populations, so it was an easy decision to apply this Collaborative Care Model to help our adolescents in need. We couldn’t have done this without Array’s expertise, guidance, and collaboration, and the participation of our payers.”
The pediatric Collaborative Care Model follows the launch of a successful adult model between Array and United Physicians, which has achieved sustained improvements on PHQ-9 and GAD-7 scores among adults enrolled in the program. Patient-reported measures indicate that patients feel improvement in dealing with anxiety and depression, are better able to engage in activities of daily living and are more satisfied with their lives and relationships as a result of the program.
“United Physicians and Array are aligned in our goal to help patients achieve remission of conditions, not just reduction of symptoms. We’ve seen it in adults, and we expect the same among teens and children,” said Charissa Isaacs, LPC, Manager of Collaborative Care for Array Behavioral Care. “We are so grateful to partner with United Physicians in bringing psychiatry into primary care settings. The Collaborative Care Model requires a team approach, and we couldn’t have asked for a better partner.”

Array Joins Hall of Fame Behavioral Health Centers of Excellence
Mount Laurel, NJ — Array Behavioral Care, the largest telepsychiatry practice in the country and a thought leader in modern behavioral health care, has been chosen as the exclusive national telebehavioral health partner of Hall of Fame of Behavioral Health, an affiliate of The Pro Football Hall of Fame. Along with the partnership, Array has joined Hall of Fame Behavioral Health’s Centers of Excellence, a nationwide network of elite facilities that provide the highest quality of care to former players and their families.
With this new partnership, current and former pro football athletes, their families, as well as coaches, trainers, agents, and other professionals, now have access to Array’s telehealth services, which include secure, online video calls with a psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, counselor or therapist matched to their needs. Array’s clinicians will provide online psychiatric evaluations, counseling, therapy and medication management, among other services. Additionally, Array’s behavioral health specialists will serve as telebehavioral experts for Hall of Fame Behavioral Health educational events and promotions.
“Being a professional athlete in the public eye comes with a host of stressors on individuals’ mental health. Unfortunately, a huge barrier to access is the stigma associated with an athlete admitting that their mental health may not match their physical health,” said Wes Cain, President & CEO of Hall of Fame Behavioral Health. “We chose Array as our telebehavioral care partner for their commitment to mental health care destigmatization, access, and quality, not just for athletes, but also for their families and support systems.”
Array Behavioral Care Named Exclusive Telebehavioral Care Partner to Hall of Fame Behavioral Health
Over the course of 2021, athletes across all sports have led a shift of making mental health more relatable. Athletes on the world stage, from Naomi Osaka to Simon Biles to Noah Lyles, have bravely spoken up about their mental health struggles and why a healthy mind is undeniably connected to a fulfilling life on and off the field of competition. They have used their professional and personal platforms to spark candid conversations about the importance of mental health and well-being. Array seeks to build on this momentum through its partnership with Hall of Fame Behavioral Health by extending its mission of transforming access to quality, timely behavioral health care to all individuals affiliated with The Pro Football Hall of Fame, empowering them with the tools they need to overcome mental health obstacles and achieve purpose, balance, and fulfillment in their lives.
“A healthy mind is undeniably connected to a healthy body. Stress, substances, self-doubt, stigma, and scarcity of access to quality care can impede even the strongest athletes’ ability to achieve wellness. On top of that, those who live at home with them or work with them professionally are often subject to similar challenges,” said Dr. Nicole Christian-Brathwaite, a double board-certified adult and child and adolescent psychiatrist and Array’s Senior Vice President and Medical Director of Scheduled Care and AtHome. “We’ve teamed up with Hall of Fame Behavioral Health because we share a common goal to break down barriers preventing athletes and their support systems from achieving the mental wellness they deserve.”
To kick off the new partnership, Dr. Nicole Christian-Brathwaite and Marlene McDermott, an Array LMFT serving children, adolescents, and adults spoke at Enshrinement Week August 5-9, 2021 to educate athletes and their families on mental health topics and their exclusive access to Array’s telebehavioral health services. Athletes and Pro Football of Fame Affiliates interested in finding an Array clinician matched to their needs can get started now. Visit Array’s website for more information about Array AtHome.

In a recent Health Evolution article, Dr. Nicole Christian-Brathwaite, Senior Vice President and Associate Medical Director of Scheduled Care and AtHome Care at Array, discusses how telehealth increases access to behavioral health care, particularly for underserved communities and populations. Despite its many benefits, she acknowledges that challenges still exist, especially when it comes to payment parity, prescribing of controlled substances, and the digital divide.
COVID-19 has had a significant impact on our healthcare system, most notably, the increased use and widespread adoption of telehealth. Many patients and providers in New Jersey and across the country, have come to rely on telehealth services during the pandemic and do not want to abruptly lose access to those services once the public health emergency period ends. Array Behavioral Care CEO Geoffrey Boyce recently penned an op ed with Ann Mond Johnson, CEO of the American Telemedicine Association, calling on NJ Governor Murphy to support legislation to ensure NJ residents have permanent access to virtual care. New Jersey cannot afford to squander this opportunity and take a step backward. Patients overwhelmingly want to use telehealth, providers appreciate its ability to help them better deliver care and manage patients’ health, and it’s a lifeline for so many of the patients too often left behind by our healthcare system.
